RPS adjusts schedule due to UCI World Road Championship

With the Big Bike Race™ just over a week away, Richmond Public Schools makes some last-minute schedule changes, including an entire day off for students and employees.

Welp, it looks like some Richmond City Public School parents need to start scrambling to make childcare arrangements.

At its first meeting of the 2015-2016 school year, Richmond City’s School Board approved a recommendation to make notable changes to the school calendar in anticipation of transportation challenges expected to be caused by the UCI World Road Championship.

Per Richmond Public Schools’ Twitter account, students will be dismissed two hours early on Thursday, September 24th. RPS schools and offices will be closed on Friday, September 25th.

This decisions comes almost a full month after Henrico and Hanover Counties decided to close up shop on September 23rd (a Wednesday) because of expected traffic challenges. So why the delay with RPS? Ned Oliver over at the RTD offers this explanation:

“Bedden said the district delayed taking action because staff members wanted to wait until more race details were finalized.”

Deep breaths, everyone. We’re going to be ok. And at least your kids have additional chances to get in on the Big Bike Race™ festivities!
