Richmond SPCA expanding

Expanding to meet the growing needs of Richmond’s furry friends.

The Richmond SPCA is beginning construction to expand its veterinary and training offerings for the public and will share the plans for the new facility at a news conference on May 13. The capital campaign to fund the project has raised more than 90 percent of its goal, enabling the local non-profit to begin building out the 18,000-square-foot space adjacent to its Robins-Starr Humane Center at 2519 Hermitage Road.

A pilot program to offer full-service veterinary care at a low cost, called the Clinic for Compassionate Care, began at the Richmond SPCA in March of 2012. Demand for these services has been well established through the pilot program.

The Clinic for Compassionate Care is currently unable to accept additional clients, having exceeded the capacity of the small examination and surgery space within the Robins-Starr Humane Center. The expansion to the new facility will expand resources.

Training classes and behavior consultations are currently offered to more than 1,650 students annually at the Robins-Starr Humane Center as well as four off-site locations. This project adds capacity to meet the community’s demand for reward-based training methods consistent with the mission of the Richmond SPCA.
