Redskins double ‘ambassador’ opportunities after overflow of applications

Fans overwhelmed the City with applications to become a Redskins training camp volunteer. Now the ‘Skins are increasing the availability and extending the application deadline.

Over 800 people applied to become a volunteer “ambassador” for the Washington Redskins Training Camp after the City last week requested a core group of 100 (PDF) to provide customer service throughout the upcoming training camp.

Because of the response, the Redskins are doubling opportunities for ambassadors to participate by increasing their number of volunteers per shift from 35 to 70. As a result, applications have been extended until 5:00 PM today.

Those selected for ambassadorships will serve one of two time slots each day during the four-week training camp: either 8:00 AM – 1:00 PM, or 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM.

Ambassadors will be rewarded based on shifts completed using a benchmark scale:

  • Three shifts worked: Redskins pin
  • Five shifts: a second Redskins pin
  • Seven shifts: opportunity to attend autograph session with Redskin players and coaches
  • 10 shifts: trip to attend a Redskins home game with guest, which includes transportation
  • 12 or more shifts: trip to attend a Redskins home game with guest, including transportation, plus the opportunity to take part in a special on-field pre-game presentation

People can volunteer here. Training camp runs from July 25th – August 16th.

Ah, now I see why the Redskins moved to Richmond. The city is filled with unemployed lunatics willing to work for free (correction, for commemorative pins) for a billion dollar sports franchise. Have fun with that.

I guess these 100+ unpaid jobs were included as part of the job count for the pigskins coming to town.

Nice. Still, as with all religions, people will do anything to be part of something they believe in and be overjoyed to do it. And while the multi-billion dollar business most certainly fleeced the city to build their 4-week training camp, the importance of the influx of dollars to local businesses during the bleak summer months can not be overstated…

    From the Mayor’s press release:

“As the new home of the Redskins three week summer training camp beginning this year, the world-class training facility will bring an estimated $40 million investment to Richmond, in addition to hundreds of new jobs. The economic impact of the camp alone is estimated to be $8.5 million per year. ”

Ah, a carefully worded statement. “Hundreds of new jobs.”

No mention of those being paid jobs- Good job Mayor!

If there’s so many applicants, why not make them pay the Redskins for the privilege of indentured servitude! Lets say, $100 a day to stand out in the sun waving cars through the kiss-and-ride? Sounds like a deal to me!

    Daniel Snyder would be proud!

I guess this anwers the question whether anybody in Richmond is really interested in the training camp. It will be interesting to see how many others show up just to watch.

Hello, my name is Sandra Grove and I would want a job. I have alot of experience working with people, and have good people skills. I’ve been working all of the years since high school here in Richmond and know a lot of people here.

How can I apply for this job?
