Tomorrow is PARK(ing) Day in RVA

There won’t be as many parking spaces tomorrow. Here’s why it’s a good (and cool) thing.

Parking spaces all over the world will get a makeover tomorrow during the annual PARK(ing) Day. In Richmond, volunteers will convert six spaces into useable green areas such as parklets, tech hot spots, and even urban farms.

“PARK(ing) Day is memorable because it encourages people to look at built environments in a new way,” said Andy Boenau, an urban planner who created a croquet-themed parklet in the Fan District for last year’s RVA PARK(ing) Day. “People get a glimpse of how streets can be enhanced without being dominated by auto traffic.”

Tomorrow’s event lasts from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM and will include six parking spots from Carytown to Shockoe Bottom (see map below). Each temporary parklet will have a unique theme and design and will include seating, greenery, and amenities.
