More apartments slated for Tobacco Row

It has been both a cigar and a hat factory.

The building at 2323 E. Main Street has been purchased and plans are being laid to turn it into 71 apartments with rental range of $750 to $1,500 a month.

RTD has the full story including a look at the building’s past.

Constructed in stages from 1912 through 1915, the building was first a cigar and cigarette manufacturing plant for the Whitlock branch of the P. Lorillard Co. McFarlane said old newspaper clippings indicate as many as 1,000 women worked at the plant at one time.

Part of the building was designed by architect Duncan Lee, whose portfolio includes the ballroom and oval dining room in an addition to Virginia’s Executive Mansion.

After its life in the tobacco industry, the nearly 60,000-square-foot building was a hat factory. It has been dormant for decades.
