Local thieves targeting AC units

Call in any suspicious activity.

Sherri and Greg of Springhill are letting the community know about a recent experience they had with a pair of thieves.

About 10 PM last night (Wednesday), 2 men were attempting to take either the copper pipes or the AC compressor units (or both) from next to our house. Fortunately, we interrupted them and they took off without our equipment. Unfortunately, the unit was damaged and we lost all of the refrigerant. We reported this to the police who told us that there has been a lot of this going on around our neighborhoods this spring/summer. Keep a look out – call the police if you see anything, or anyone, sketchy.

Our attempted thieves/accomplished vandals were both white males, one in his 50s wearing dirty painters clothes, one younger (20s?) in darker clothes, carrying a large bag over his shoulder. The older guy was on a bike, drinking from a paper bag – the younger guy referred to him as “Curtis.” They took off north on 20th into the James River Park.

A detective contacted us today and said they’ve been after these guys for awhile and were interested in the fact that we had a pretty good description of them. Stay vigilant, neighbors!

If you spot these bandits, call 9-1-1. You may also provide more information by contacting Police Officer Nixon directly at 804-646-1165.

AC unit pictured is not the one that was damaged and is guarded by landmines, sharks with lasers, vicious dogs, and flesh eating weeds. Same goes for that copper downspout in the background.

They also damaged two other AC units on the same evening on the block behind Sherri & Greg.

    What neighborhood(s)?

Springhill has been targeted the last couple nights, it seems. They have also hit in Woodland Heights in the past couple weeks. Same MO. This morning we reported a guy passed out in a station wagon near the previously targeted homes in Springhill. The driver’s door was open and he had bolt cutters in the car. Yeesh! The wagon was older, dark red with wood panels. Also look out for a silver minivan with NY plates. They came to help the doofus in the wagon jump start his car after the police left. Not positive that the wagon and van are involved but it sure seems like a whacky coincidence.

My girlfriend and I live in Westover Hills on Semmes. We had both of our AC units taken during the evening of July 19th while we were not at home. It was reported to the police. Unfortunately, none of our neighbors saw anything suspicious.

I’m curious where the AC units were that they tried to steal? Ours was on the side of the house, not behind a fence. Unfortunately, very easy to get to, but we’d just moved in.

  5. A neighbor on Riverside near 24th Street had his stolen during the night a few weeks ago.

Word is that the police have apprehended the culprits.

Stuffa’s correct. The detective called this morning to tell us they arrested one guy on Friday. The fire dept crew called police Friday morning after seeing him with metal pipes and a lawn mower he’d stashed in the woods on 22nd. Police found him at the metal recycling place on Decatur. He confessed to multiple offenses. At least there’s one fewer thief in the neighborhood.

  8. That’s good…i was considering chaining my units to the house somehow, LOL
