Napoleon Taxi and Nightlife Virginia have partnered to create a free late-night transportation service called The Hop RVA. The bus service debuts tonight–Friday, June 6th–at 6:00 PM and runs between the Carytown Kroger and the 17th Street Farmers Market in Shockoe Bottom.

“It is the sole mission of Napoleon Taxi & Nightlife Virginia to provide a service that is both fun and free, [and] to answer the need for better public transportation after business hours,” said a released statement. “This service hopes to promote safe driving, while giving those who might be too inebriated to drive another means of transportation. With VCU so close, it will assist in giving those students, who are out enjoying the nightlife, a safer ride home.”

The Hop RVA will run Fridays and Saturdays from 6:00 PM – 3:00 AM, and will offer live GPS tracking on its website.

Much like its predecessor, To the Bottom and Back, The Hop RVA will provide its free service with the help of individual and business donations. Businesses may purchase advertising space on the bus through a sponsorship package.

The new service wants to have three buses by the start of VCU’s Fall Semester. Organizers are also planning routes that’ll focus on local tourism and Sunday brunch spots.

I asked VCU President Rao about partnering with the City and GRTC more to offer better mass transit this past Wednesday and his reply was something to the effect of having to follow student interests and needs. (VCU maintains a private contract with Groome Transportation for its own bus circulator between its medical and academic campuses.)

  2. Just like To the Bottom and Back, this is definitely a good thing and I’m glad Napoleon Taxi and Nightlife Virginia have provided it. Hopefully it can build on 2BnB’s past success and provide an effective late-night transit option (sometimes the fact that GRTC doesn’t run 24/7 like other city transit systems irks me a bit).

I wish they had a stop in the Manchester area near the bridge by the old spaghetti warehouse and artwork there are a lot of new apartments in this area it would be nice to have a ride down to the bottom or up main

Are they still going to drop off in front of nightclubs owned by Charlie Diradour and his friends, like 2BNB did? Or are they going to add more stops and open it up a bit more?
