Good Morning, RVA: #YesAllWomen

A hot and humid Memorial Day.

Good morning, RVA! It’s 60 °F, and happy Memorial Day! Whatever your plans, today’s weather looks to be a beautiful compliment: hot (highs in the upper 80), humid, and sunny. If you’re not sweating, you’re not living.

Backyard chatter

This past Friday, seven people were killed and 13 wounded in the California town of Isla Vista. The killer, Elliot Rodger, hated women, and in his long, disturbing manifesto he stated: “…you girls aren’t attracted to me, but I will punish you all for it. I’ll take great pleasure in slaughtering all of you.” And he did. However, out of this awful tragedy has come some important dialogue about how we view and treat women. Take a moment today and read through some of the #YesAllWomen posts on Twitter or the social network of your choosing (here’s a helpful comic about “not all men” to give you some context).

Richmond native and former Virginia Tech Hokie Davon Morgan has signed a deal with the Philadelphia Eagles. Morgan’s story is a good one, filled with perseverance, arena football (in Richmond!), and sportsemotions.

If you’re looking for ways to spend your Memorial Day that don’t involve a beer, a burger, and a backyard, we’ve got you covered. And if you need help with the burger aspect of your day, I’m rather partial to this slider recipe from way back in 2010.

This morning’s longread

Let’s call the Isla Vista killings what they were: misogynist extremism

But if you think for one second, for one solitary second, that demanding tolerance for men as a group, that dismissing the reality of violence against women because not all men kill, not all men rape, if you think that’s more important than demanding justice for those who have been brutalised and murdered by those not all men, then you are part of the problem. You may not have pulled the trigger. You may not have raised your hand to a woman in your life. But you are part of the problem.
