Good morning, RVA! It’s 50 °F right now, but today should warm up nicely with highs in the mid-70s. Just how far into October can we push this streak of nice weather? The five-day forecast says at least through the end of this week!

We did the Big Bike Race™. We did the 11th (!) Folk Festival. What’s next? Without thousands of people streaming into town, I’m not sure what to do with myself. WRIC says that the numbers were good for this year’s massive music party down on the river, which is great because so much dang work goes into making the Folk Festival happen each and every year. Thank you and great work to everyone involved!
Today is Columbus Day, maybe the weirdest holiday that we kind of celebrate. Some schools are closed, some government services are closed, it’s kind of a mixed bag. The Washington Post has more on the effort of cities to switch away from celebrating Columbus to celebrating the folks that were already here when he arrived.
City Council meets tonight at 6:00 PM, and we’re using Genius to annotate the agenda again. Highlights include: creating online spaces for public information relating to “certain projects,” bike lane stuff on 1st and 2nd Streets, and publicly available audit records for each city department. If you feel moved, get in there an help us annotate this thing–but be aware some of these items will likely be continued to a future date.
Council will also hold a joint meeting with the School Board today from 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM, here’s that agenda. This meeting of the minds that run our city happens infrequently; let’s hope everyone makes it their beeswax to be there for it.
Ned Oliver updates us on Doug Wilder’s multi-year journey toward a slavery museum and his current conversations with VCU to bring such a museum to the First African Baptist Church building on E. Broad Street. I hope that there’s some conversations going on between this project and the impending Lumpkin’s Jail project–seems like a great opportunity for some strategic cooperation.
So many of Vox’s seven possible paths forward for the GOP in the Speaker of the House fiasco involve things continuing along exactly as before.

- Wahoos drop another heartbreaker, losing 19-26 to Pitt.
- Washington fell to the Falcons, 19-25, on a Kirk Cousins interception in overtime.
