Good Morning, RVA: Welcome to Wednesday

How’s your Wednesday so far? Is it everything you hoped and dreamed?

Good morning, RVA! It’s 74 °F this fine Wednesday morning. By fine I, of course, mean hot, humid, with a very slight chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon.

Five members of City Council met yesterday to pass special use permits for a possible East Coast location of Stone Brewing Co. The legislation passed quickly, will head to the Planning Commission on September 2nd, and back to Council on September 8th. No word from Stone yet on when a true and final location will be chosen.

Governor McAuliffe has declared the November election in the 7th Congressional District, Eric Cantor’s old seat, a special election. This means the winner of the election will take office “as soon as practical” and will not need to wait until January like the rest of the newly elected congressfolk.

Richmond Bizsense has a nice Q&A with An Bui from Mekong about his pending brewpub, college keg stands, and the state of Richmond beer.

Apple has chosen September 9th as the date to hold their 2014 iPhone event, during which they’ll (presumably) announce the (possibly) larger iPhone 6.

The Watermelon Festival is this weekend–just putting that on your radar. The current forecast puts Sunday’s temperature at an atypically pleasant 83 °F.

Sports!

  • Squirrels busted by Binghamton, 6-9. The rematch takes place tonight at 7:05 PM; tickets are available online.
  • Nats walloped by the Mets, 6-1. They’ll try again tonight at 7:05 PM.

Shedding Light on the Past: One Man’s (Manual) Labor of Love

Here, countless coffins sink deeper each day into the soft soil, causing the ground to undulate like ripples on calm water – but this landscape is anything but calm. Thick and thorny brambles push past a blanket of poison ivy to snag at shirtsleeves and scratch at skin. Kudzu-cloaked obelisks rise like green-gloved fingers, pointing in futile defiance against nature’s unchecked onslaught…No one knows the dark landscape of this abandoned cemetery better than John Shuck.

  1. Who took the photo at the top? Looks like it’s from a farmers’ market. Photo credits are always appreciated.

@PJ it’s credited! Right above the instagram. I like to put the photo credit in GMRVA above the instagram so it’s not confusing who took which picture.

  3. Thanks much!!
