Good Morning, RVA: Weekend chill vibes ahead!

Good morning, RVA! It’s 68 °F. What kind of expectations can you have for today? Good ones! Highs in the 90s, sunshine, no rain–the perfect way to kick off the weekend, right? The great weather looks like it will hold throughout the weekend, too, but temperatures will increase over the next couple of days.

Every single word in this piece by the RTD’s Graham Moomaw about the Sons of Confederate Veterans reunion is pure gold. It’s the best example of privileged white dudes making themselves the center of a story that I’ve read in a while. So victimized do these guys feel that, out of context, it’s hard to tell which side they support. E.g.: “The days of Reconstruction are upon us again…And this time, we must prevail”, “It’s what the brownshirts did in Germany”, and “[there’s been a] visceral reaction to this wave of cultural cleansing.” Wait, are you guys talking about the 400 years of slavery we kind of pretend didn’t happen? I’m confused.

WTVR has a long piece on a new anti-BRT coalition that’s formed and consists mostly of neighborhood associations along the BRT corridor. They feel like GRTC is rushing into this whole BRT thing (the first mention of “BRT” on RVANews was on February 4th, 2008) and are, of course, concerned about parking. If you support the BRT, there are (and have been) one zillion public meeting for you to attend and make your voice heard. You can also email your councilperson!

Katy Burnell Evans at the RTD has word that Councilwoman Robertson has advanced legislation to get more transparency and process behind big projects–ones that cost the city more than $5 million. After some of the recent frustrations between the Mayor’s office and City Council over the Stone Brewing Co. project, this was inevitable.

Sports are back! Hurrah!

• Squirrels were blanked by Altoona, 0-5. That series continues over the weekend, including a doubleheader tonight that starts at 5:35 PM.
• Kickers host the West Bromwich Albion, members of the English Premier League(!), this Sunday. Awesome! Get your ticket online now.
• Nats kick off a series with the Dodgers tonight at 7:05 PM.
• D.C. United returns to action against FC Dallas tomorrow at 9:00 PM
