Good Morning, RVA: Wear layers

Seriously chilly this morning but beautiful (and warmer) this afternoon makes for challenging early-morning wardrobe choices.

Good morning, RVA! It’s 39 °F which seems terrible, but by late morning today’s gonna seem pretty awesome. Highs in the low-70s, no chance of rain, and plenty of sunshine should make up for this morning’s unnecessary chill.

Tonight at 6:45 PM NASA will launch an Antares cargo-bearing rocket bound for the International Space Station from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport in Wallops, Virginia. The launch may be visible from RVA–just look southeast about two minutes after blastoff–or you can watch a live stream on Ustream.

The RTD has a super-long and super-detailed piece about the financial risks the City takes on with the Stone Brewing project. My brain has a hard time understanding stuff like this, but I think if Stone leaves Richmond or goes out of business in 15 years or less, the City is on the hook for some big-time cash. On the other hand, at the end of the 30-year lease, if everything goes as planned, there’s a boatload of money to be made.

Here’s a couple dozen gross photos from this past weekend’s 10th annual Richmond zombie walk. 10 years is a crazy long time to do anything, let alone dress up like bloody, shambling corpses and walk around Richmond’s Mile of Style. Good work zombies!

Richmond police are reporting a triple shooting in the East End that resulted in the death of one person: “At approximately 1:25 AM, officers were called to the 1400 block of Coalter Street for the report of shots fired. Officers arrived and found three males in the area of Coalter and Redd streets suffering from gunshot wounds. One male was pronounced dead at the scene while two other males were transported to VCU Medical Center with injuries that are not considered life threatening.” This is 2014’s 38th homicide and October’s 7th.

Sports!

  • Wahoos fall to UNC, 27-28, on a late fourth-quarter scoring drive.
  • Washington faces 6-1 Dallas tonight at 8:30 PM.
  • Capitals, who are 4-2-2 on the season, lost to the Cannucks of Vancouver this weekend.
  • Giants lead the Royals 3-2 in the World Series. They’ll play what could be a final game tomorrow at 8:07 PM.

Valentine’s Meat-Juice

Sooooooooo what’s the deal with meat juice?

Mann Valentine was of an artistic temperament and was an inveterate collector of antiques and curiosities. He didn’t consider himself suited for commerce; yet he’d managed to create something people wanted. The best medical care in his day merely eased pain, seldom curing anything, and the ingredients of many pharmaceuticals used alcohol or narcotics. Meat juice, on the contrary, was a “nourishing protein tonic.” Or, as might be said today, a multivitamin. It could be heated up and ingested as a kind of bouillon, or tea, or you could drink it straight from the bottle. A 2-ounce bottle contained the concentrated juice from 4 pounds of beef.

  1. While you’re already out there at 6:45PM to see the rocket launch, you can also see the International Space Station passing by at 6:49PM, visible for 6 min, max height 72 degrees, appears NW, disappears SE.
