Good Morning, RVA: We did it!

The endless winter has ended! Long live the spring!

Good morning, RVA! It’s 45 °F right now and there’s a high today of 68 °F and I think we did it, you guys. You may see a cloud or two this afternoon, but who gives a crap when there’s no need for a trillion layers and nary a chance of slipping to your death down the office stairs!

The college basketball regular season is over and March Madness officially starts…now! The CAA tournament wraps up tonight at 7:00 PM with William & Mary angling for its first-ever NCAA tournament bid. The ACC tournament kicks off tomorrow with the Hokies vs. the Demon Deacons. The Atlantic 10 tournament begins on Wednesday. And, finally, Selection Sunday is March 15th, just six days from now. It might really be the most wonderful time of the year!

Today’s great headline comes from the RTD’s Graham Moomaw: “As zoning battle drags on, rats feast in South Richmond corner store.”

Apple will host an event today for their forthcoming Watch. Things kick off at 1:00 PM, and you can stream it live if you’re so inclined (I am, of course, deeply inclined).

Sports!

• Rams took out their frustrations on George Mason, winning 71-60. The #5 seed Rams will play the winner of George Mason and Fordham on Thursday at 2:30 PM.
• Spiders handled Saint Louis, 67-51. They’ll take a #4 seed into the A-10 tournament and await a possible rematch with VCU.
• #2 Wahoos fell to #16 Lousiville on a last-second shot, 57-59. It was just their second loss of the regular season. They’ll play the winner of Florida State and Clemson this Thursday in the quarterfinals of the ACC tournament.
• Hokies were crushed by Miami and ended the season dead last in the ACC. They’ll face the Demon Deacons tomorrow in the first round of the ACC tournament.
• #1 Randolph Macon advances to the third round of the NCAA Div III tournament to take on St. John Fisher.
• Caps rebuffed Buffalo, 6-1.

Remarks by the President at the 50th Anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery Marches

President Obama’s speech this past Saturday at Selma is worth your time this morning.

What they did here will reverberate through the ages. Not because the change they won was preordained; not because their victory was complete; but because they proved that nonviolent change is possible, that love and hope can conquer hate.

As we commemorate their achievement, we are well-served to remember that at the time of the marches, many in power condemned rather than praised them. Back then, they were called Communists, or half-breeds, or outside agitators, sexual and moral degenerates, and worse–they were called everything but the name their parents gave them. Their faith was questioned. Their lives were threatened. Their patriotism challenged.

And yet, what could be more American than what happened in this place? What could more profoundly vindicate the idea of America than plain and humble people–unsung, the downtrodden, the dreamers not of high station, not born to wealth or privilege, not of one religious tradition but many, coming together to shape their country’s course?
