Good morning, RVA! It’s 62 °F. There’s a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms this afternoon, and the temperature will climb into the upper 80s. Today’s weather, just like life, has both positives and negatives.

The proposed Bus Rapid Transit system inches ever forward. It’s still in the “I’ll believe it when I see it” stage, but how good does downtown to Willow Lawn in 21 minutes for $1.50 sound? So good!
The city put Deputy Chief Administrative Officer for Finance and Administration Sharon Judkins on “extended sick leave” back in the beginning of May, and today, Mayor Jones will fill that vacancy. After having not the best run of things, she was offered $400,000 in severance, an offer that’s since been revoked after it was reported by local media. Hmmmm.
Style Weekly’s reader-chosen “Best of Richmond” issue is out. Go see if you or your favorite restaurant / store / councilperson / traffic light received a great honor!
The 2011 earthquake damaged and condemned an elementary school in Louisa, and the replacement school opens this weekend. Students have met in trailers during the (three year) interim.
Former Virginia governor Bob McDonnell’s corruption trial will go ahead as planned, and his case will not be separated from that of his wife Maureen McDonnell. And the two will become one flesh, I guess!

Stop forcing people to wear bike helmets
A bit of a crazy headline, but the thrust here is that mandatory helmet laws discourage bicycling in a major way while not necessarily improving rider safety.
One question to start with is why we require helmets for bikers but not for pedestrians or drivers. Is there something inherently dangerous about biking?
It doesn’t appear so. Back in the early 1990s, Australia collected good data on head injuries for walking, biking, and driving. (This was before the country imposed mandatory helmet laws for bikers.) And what they found was that biking was only slightly more dangerous than walking or driving.
