Good morning, RVA! It’s 50 °F, but today feels sorry for the past couple of days so we’re getting highs in the mind-60s and plenty of sun. Use it wisely, like one of your last torches in Minecraft.

It’s Veterans Day! Today we celebrate and honor all of our military veterans, but the date is the anniversary of the armistice with Germany at end of World War I on Novemeber 11th, 1918 at 11:00 AM. WWI fascinates me: a time when contemporary war strategy (charge into things with your horses) had yet to catch up to contemporary technology (machine guns). If you’re interested in learning more, this epically long podcast by Dan Carlin is where I would start. If you’re looking for a way to celebrate the day that does not involve hours and hours of podcasts, the War Memorial will have a ceremony honoring those who’ve served at 10:00 AM.
Pedantic note: “Veterans Day” not “Veterans’ Day” as it is “not a day that ‘belongs’ to veterans, it is a day for honoring all veterans.”
Oh how long has it been since we’ve last had the opportunity to read about baseball stadiums! Ned Oliver and Michael Martz have an update on the mayor’s new plan for the Boulevard that dropped immediately after Councilman Baliles announced the Children’s Hospital plan was sunk. It seems the Squirrels have been mostly left out of this planning process, to which their chief executive manager said “What have we done wrong?” Maybe there are some ruffled city feathers after that whole open letter thing and the decision to look at stadium locations in the counties? WRIC got their hands on the official expenditures report from the City for the Big Bike Race™. It’s not a super detailed document, so don’t expect a check register. Other than $2 million for “non-departmental appropriations,” police were the largest expense at $1,315,916.

Living and Dying on Airbnb
The rope swing looked inviting. Photos of it on Airbnb brought my family to the cottage in Texas. Hanging from a tree as casually as baggy jeans, the swing was the essence of leisure, of Southern hospitality, of escape. When my father decided to give it a try on Thanksgiving morning, the trunk it was tied to broke in half and fell on his head, immediately ending most of his brain activity.
