Good Morning, RVA: Unpleasantly cold

Today’s bad, tomorrow’s worse.

Good morning, RVA! It’s 14 °F, and while there’s a chance of snow this afternoon don’t expect a ton of accumulation. The big news, however, is the impending Day After Tomorrow-level cold. Starting today, the National Weather Service has issued a wind chill advisory that warns of temperatures down to five below. They recommend that “if you must venture outside…make sure you wear a hat and gloves,” which is sage advice.

Starting tomorrow, temperatures will plunge into single digits where they’ll plunge some more straight past zero (so keep the hat and gloves handy). The absurd cold will continue until Saturday.

Public schools are closed today, and VCU opens at 10:00 AM. We’ll update this list if anything changes.

Today is Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. This is your friendly reminder that some folks you encounter today may have intentionally put ash on their foreheads and do not need you to tell them that they’ve got something on their face. Sacred Heart has a 12:00 PM service, if you’re looking.

I like this article on Vox about eating insects. It’s hard to argue with the environmental and ethical upsides to raising and consuming insects as a source of protein. It is even harder to argue with my dumb brain that would rather die than eat a spider cricket. The Gastropod podcast recently had a good episode that talks about entomophagy (the practice of eating insects).

A beagle named Miss P won Best in Show at the Westminster Kennel Club 2015 Dog Show. The “reserve winner” was named GCH Cragsmoor Good Time Charlie, which I find delightful.

This morning’s longread

Gotta update the will with who gets my Evernote notebooks when I die.

My dad died in 2011. He was an old school techie from back in the mainframe days: a maker type with a basement full of tools, an office full of new and old computers, and a house full of complex systems that only he fully understood. The house, his whole life really, was designed to run with a minimum of human interaction. He was lifehacked up the wazoo.
