Good Morning, RVA: Today’s heat is not a joke

A day-long heat advisory should keep you cloistered inside, sitting next to the air conditioner.

Good morning, RVA! It’s 76 °F, and holy moly it’s gonna be a hot one. Highs today in the mid-90s with heat indexes all the way up to 108 °F have put us squarely in the middle of a heat advisory from 12:00 – 8:00 PM. Limit your out-of-doors activity! Stay hydrated! Don’t leave things you love in the car!

Late Friday night, the mayor’s office sent out this press release about ballparks, children’s hospitals, and development on the Boulevard (oh my). So many questions! With the possibility of baseball moving to the counties, how will Richmonders (who have at times been “meh, baseball.” about the whole thing) react? Didn’t Chesterfield County just say they wanted to “focus on the critical needs of county residents“? Is a free-standing children’s hospital even a good idea? Graham Moomaw and Michael Martz have some more reactions from around the region.

Fall Line Fest canceled and RVA Street Art Fest postponed. Say it ain’t so!

I have a long-standing argument with a couple of my friends that smoking a whole pig, while certainly delicious, misses out on a lot of the benefits you get from roasting one in a box–namely the skin doesn’t turn into inedible, smoky leather. Next month, I will take them to The Rogue Gentlmen where we can settle this once and for all by eating them both side-by-side as the scientific method demands.

The Huffington Post has decided to cover Donald Trump’s presidential campaign not in its political section but in the entertainment section: “If you are interested in what The Donald has to say, you’ll find it next to our stories on the Kardashians and The Bachelorette.” LOL!

This, in the NYT, made me laugh: what if men validated men on Facebook like women validate women?

Sports!

  • Squirrels played four games against Altoona, winning three, including both of Friday’s double header. The series against Akron begins tonight, and you can get your tickets right here.
  • Kickers couldn’t get it done against West Bromley and lost 1-2 on a goal in the 88th minute.
  • Nats went 1-2 against the Dodgers over the weekend. Bleh. They’ll start a series with the Mets tonight at 7:05 PM.
  • D.C. United fell 1-2 to FC Dallas on a late, injury-time goal.

This morning’s longread

Do no harm: There’s an infection hospitals can nearly always prevent. Why don’t they?

A similar divide exists in modern medicine, when it comes to patient harm — especially for patient harm from central line infections. There are hospitals in the United States that view some level of central line infections as a sad but inevitable effect of putting thousands of these tubes into patients’ bodies each year. And then there are other hospitals that see each central line infection as a failure that requires investigation and better preventive techniques in the future.
