Good Morning, RVA: Time to dig out

Richmonders! Grab your shovels!

Good morning, RVA! It’s 24 °F, and did you survive? If you did, you just experienced Richmond’s 11th biggest snow storm ever (as measured by depth of snow accumulation–RVA saw right around 12 inches). Thankfully, there’s no snow in today’s forecast, and highs in the mid-40s should help melt things a bit and clear up the roads. If you’ve got to drive this morning, please be careful as yesterday’s slush and melt is today’s icy death trap.

Basically, most things are still closed. This is not your typical “Richmond closes down for two inches of snow and some clouds.” This was a storm of historic proportions! We’re allowed to close things down for a second while we catch our breath and dig out. A cancellation of note: City Council has postponed their meeting tonight, at which they were voting on the development agreement for BRT.

Snow reminders! If you own a home and have a sidewalk, you are legally required to shovel that dang thing–in fact, you were required to do so yesterday. As for the city and their requirements to plow the streets, you can follow their progress on this map. They’ll be hitting Priority 1 and Priority 2 routes (PDF) first, so you may have to sit tight before your neighborhood sees a plow.

Looks like Councilman Jon Baliles may be getting a bit closer to an official 2016 mayoral bid. Richmond Magazine’s Mark Robinson reports that Baliles has hired State Senator Glen Sturtevant’s fundraising coordinator. This quote is perfect: “Asked for what she would be helping him fundraise, he replied ‘2016’ with a sunglasses face emoji.”

Sports!

Super Bowl 50 will feature the Carolina Panthers and the Devner Broncos. You’ve got until February 7th to get your chips and dip ready.

  • Rams beat St. Bonaventure, 84-76, moving to 7-0 in conference play.
  • Spiders host Davidson tonight at 7:00 PM. You can watch on CSN+.
  • #13 Wahoos downed the Orange, 73-65.
  • Hokies lost by five in the final minutes to #2 North Carolina.

Your Life Is Tetris. Stop Playing It Like Chess.

Here’s an straightforward thinkpiece to help ease your way back into the week.

Tetris, to some, is frustration incarnate. It’s repetitive! It’s impossible to win! It’s driven by luck! But to me, it became the truest representation of life there is. In comparison, chess is just a silly war game.
