Good Morning, RVA: The week ends!
A beautiful day to celebrate the end of a week. No disrespect, this past week!

Good morning, RVA! It’s 64 °F, and yesterday’s storms have cooled things off a bit: highs today will sit comfortably in the mid-80s. Plenty of sun, though, so get out and enjoy it for tomorrow brings another oppourtunity for all-day rain.

Here’s a depressing update to the region’s ongoing increase in gun violence. The reason for the increase: drugs and illegal guns. It’s nice to see the Henrico and Richmond police departments working together in, what I imagine, feels like an endless, unstoppable, uphill battle. Meanwhile…
Whoa! Somehow I missed this NAACP march from Selma to D.C. that’s stopped in Richmond for the weekend. Laura Kebde at the RTD has the details, including how you can join in for some marching of your own.
Alert! Construction on the Broad Street finish line of the Big Bike Race™ begins in earnest today. This means portions of Broad Street downtown will be closed until, basically, October. Be aware! Be afraid! Be willing to detour around or take a bike to work! Related: keep an eye on the changes to the bus schedule heading into next week and beyond.

- Kickers face the Harrisburg City Islanders tomorrow at 7:00 PM in the penultimate game of the regular season.
- Spiders travel to Hampton Saturday. Kick off is at 12:00 PM, and you can listen on ESPN 950.
- Hokies host the Furman Paladins at 3:30 PM tomorrow on ESPN3. They’ll use the FCS matchup to figure out their quarterback situation.
- Wahoos welcome #9 Notre Dame to Scott Stadium at 3:30 PM. I keep forgetting that this is now a quasi conference game!
- After the day off, the Nats head down south to take on the Marlins at 7:10 PM.
- D.C. United and the Colorado Rapids do their thing out in the Mountain Timezone, this Saturday at 9:00 PM.
This morning’s longread
I, Racist
Last night at RVANews Live, Ana Edwards got me thinking about this longread–which is one of those things I’ve read and kept coming back to week after week.
White people do not think in terms of we. White people have the privilege to interact with the social and political structures of our society as individuals. You are “you,” I am “one of them.” Whites are often not directly affected by racial oppression even in their own community, so what does not affect them locally has little chance of affecting them regionally or nationally. They have no need, nor often any real desire, to think in terms of a group. They are supported by the system, and so are mostly unaffected by it.
What they are affected by are attacks on their own character. To my aunt, the suggestion that “people in The North are racist” is an attack on her as a racist. She is unable to differentiate her participation within a racist system (upwardly mobile, not racially profiled, able to move to White suburbs, etc.) from an accusation that she, individually, is a racist. Without being able to make that differentiation, White people in general decide to vigorously defend their own personal non-racism, or point out that it doesn’t exist because they don’t see it.
Kind of a bummer to head into the weekend with, but think of it as an oppourtunity to learn some stuff, go out, and make Richmond a better place.

Thank you for posting the ‘I, Racist’. I think the biggest take away for me is the idea that white society is seen as individuals who act as one and black society is seen as a collective group that acts as one. That adds a whole new perspective when I think about events specifically that have happened over the last year.
