Good Morning, RVA: The sun will come out

Your morning commute could still be a mess, though.

Good morning, RVA! It’s 31 °F, and today’s forecast is sunny, clear, and warm enough to melt away all of this ice (and the teensy bit of snow that fell overnight). If you plan on leaving the house this morning, be super careful on the roads; anything that was wet last night is probably frozen solid this morning.

Water cooler

If you’ve borne offspring, you know that area schools (Chesterfield, Hanover, Henrico, Richmond City) are operating on a two-hour delay today. VCU and UR are running on their normal schedule.

Unfortunately, I agree with this annonymous editorial in the RTD (which, since their redesign, now lists the members of the editorial team alongside the editorials–big improvement!). It sucks that Joe Morrissey won his House of Delegates seat back, but if you think the current mess is embarrassing, just imagine if the HoD tries to kick that guy out after he fairly won an election.

Speaking of state politics (tis the season), you can read the full text of Governor McAuliffe’s State of the Commonwealth address right here.

WTVR reporting on the oldest snow-day story in the book: “VCU students question why classes weren’t cancelled or delayed.”

Looks like D.C.’s battle with Congress over the legalization of marijuana has new life.

Yesterday, American astronauts had to scoot on over to the Russian side of the International Space Station when ground control suspected an ammonia leak. False alarm, turns out. I don’t think I realized how segregated the American and Russian sides of the space station are.

Sports!

  • Spiders hit the road to face the George Washington Colonials tonight at 7:00 PM and look to extend their winning streak to three.

This morning’s longread

The Broad Strokes

Broad City is a smarter, funnier, female-driven version of Workaholics. It’s lovely, and I can’t recommend it–or this adorable Grantland piece about the show’s two creators and stars–enough.

But at its core, Broad City is still a love story — just one about two hapless, pot-smoking, sexually experimental, striving, swearing, struggling, inseparable young gal pals running amok on the streets of modern-day New York City.
