Good Morning, RVA: The State of RVA

It’s cold, the mayor delivers his State of the City address tonight, and it could snow this weekend.

Good morning, RVA! It’s 23 °F, which is pretty dang cold. Today, however, you can expect a repeat of yesterday’s mostly decent weather with a few more clouds thrown in and a slight chance of afternoon showers.

OK. It’s probably time to talk about the approaching winter storm due to hit us on Sunday and Monday. We’re still a little too far out for reliable forecasts, but there is a chance for snow. Don’t freak out yet, but prepare yourself for the possibility of freaking out at a later date.

Water cooler

So many State of Whatever addresses lately! Mayor Jones will deliver his State of Whatever (the City) address tonight at the sparkly new Huguenot High School at 6:30 PM. It’s open to the public, so you could/should definitely stop by check it out. Yeah these things are mostly rah rah rah, but it’s always fun to see some live speechifying.

Somewhere around 100 students and faculty at Hampden-Sydney college are being treated for norovirus. That’s a volume of vomit and diarrhea that I have no interest in visualizing and will now spend the rest of the day washing my hands. PS. Norovirus can survive for weeks on contaminated surfaces!

Headline of the day, from the RTD: “Henrico Planning Commission delays Dollar General shrubbery“.

Yesterday was the 202nd anniversary of Pride and Prejudice, and I missed it! Vox has two charts that “explain” the novel but insult you by assuming you needed it explained.

Sports!

  • Spiders absolutely crushed Duquesne, 86-55.
  • Caps blanked the Penguins, 4-0.

“Sponsored” by my husband: Why it’s a problem that writers never talk about where their money comes from

Sure writing might make you happy, as we learned in yesterday’s long read, but the circumstances under which you can make a living doing it may be rare.

Today, I am essentially “sponsored” by this very loving man who shows up at the end of the day, asks me how the writing went, pours me a glass of wine, then takes me out to eat. He accompanies me when I travel 500 miles to do a 75-minute reading, manages my finances, and never complains that my dark, heady little books have resulted in low advances and rather modest sale
