Beautiful weather to start the week. Here we go!
Good morning, RVA! It’s 61 °F, and today’s weather is a bit of a broken record: sunny with highs near 90 °F. I’m not complaining; we could definitely start the week off in worse ways.

This past Friday, a fatal hot-air balloon accident killed three people at the Mid-Atlantic Balloon Festival near Doswell. Two of the victims were members of the UR women’s basketball coaching staff.
City Council meets tonight, and you can read the entire agenda here. If you’d like to experience Council in a more communal way (read: with more beer and more jokes), head over to the 804RVA coworking space tonight for their #RVACouncil viewing party. There are no baseball-related items on the agenda, but that never stopped them before!

A different kind of education
With the recent conversation about the dismal state of some of Richmond’s schools, this 2011 piece about the lasting impact of desegregation through busing gives context to the present situation.
It’s a hard subject to talk about. I don’t know where my story falls along the historical spectrum of Southern race relations — do I have a right to talk about what it was like to be white and assigned to a former African-American-only school (as I was at West End Elementary) under federal judge Robert R. Merhige Jr.’s order to desegregate the Richmond Public Schools by mass busing? Or, because my skin color confers upon me a place of privilege in American culture, and especially in the South at that time, is my story invalid?
