Good Morning, RVA: The beautiful weather continues!

How will you take advantage of today’s gorgeous weather?

Good morning, RVA! It’s 51 °F, and today is going to be a beautiful day in the neighborhood–regardless of neighborhood. With highs in the low to mid-80s and plenty of sunshine to go around, you’ve got no reason to spend the day with a frown on your face (no weather-related reason, you definitely could have plenty of life-related reasons to spend the day frowning).

Yesterday’s rocket launch from Wallops, Virginia was “scrubbed because of a boat down range in the trajectory Antares would have flown had it lifted off.” My six-year-old did not accept this as an adequate excuse, and he had some choice words to say about boats in general. The launch has been rescheduled for tonight at 6:22 PM and should be visible from RVA just a couple of minutes later.

The two Randolph-Macon College professors vying for Eric Cantor’s old seat in Congress will debate tonight at 7:30 PM on the college’s campus. Next week, one of these dudes will reign supreme and be crowned congressman of the 7th District. This is your early reminder to vote on November 4th. The debate will air on NBC12 and stream on rmc.edu.

I think City Council voted last night to lend the CenterStage Foundation (operators of CenterStage and the Altria Theatre née The Landmark née The Mosque) $1.75 million which the foundation will then give directly back to the City as tax payments? I dunno. But, as always, the intrepid Graham Moomaw has the details.

Council also greenlit the first set of ordinances to get Stone Brewing Co. moving.

If you’re both a Wells Fargo customer and an iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus owner, you can get free money by just using Apple Pay once. Seriously, just use a Wells Fargo credit card or debit card with Apple Pay and get a $20 or $10 credit, respectively.

Sports!

  • Washington pulled off an overtime victory against the Cowboys, 20-17, under new QB Colt McCoy.
  • Game six of the World Series, a must win for the Royals, begins tonight at 8:07 PM.

c. 1858: Photos of Veterans of the Napoleonic Wars

Today’s longread is less of a read and more of a look–a ton of pictures of soldiers from the Napoleonic Wars. Think War and Peace.

The first (and final) time these old soldiers were captured in photograph…Some of the soldiers have gained weight over the years since they fought for the Emperor; their uniforms have been let out to accommodate their girth.
