Good Morning, RVA: Temperate Friday

Take advantage of this temperate Friday before the oppressive heat returns this weekend.

Good morning, RVA! It’s 70 °F and, unlike the past however many sweltering days, today looks pretty reasonable. Expect highs in the mid-80s, your standard dose of humidity, and, of course, a chance of afternoon thunderstorms. Also, beware of heavy fog during your morning commute.

Both Saturday and Sunday will see temperatures in or near the 90s, so take advantage of today, and carpe diem a couple of beers on one of Richmond’s finer patios.

At some point, Hot 100.9, which I loved, became Easy 100.9, which, guys, I don’t hate. With a mission to provide “relaxing, refreshing music,” Easy 100.9 has become the go-to radio station in our car, mostly because who’s trying to reprogram the radio, but also because who doesn’t want to be relaxed and refreshed? Anyway, as an added bonus for Easy 100.9 listeners like you and me: Bill Bevins and Shelly Perkins will resurrect their morning radio show in the near future.

Henrico’s Planning Commission approved the plan to bring Wegmans to Broad Street–despite a last ditch, possibly super bogus attempt to stir up opposition.

Mayo Island’s owners (yes Mayo Island is privately owned) have put the island back on the market. While Richmond’s Riverfront Plan thinks the island is best suited as a city park, one of the owners thinks “the land is best suited for development. He noted that the city has ‘many, many acres of parks.'” The article from the RTD has a good list of the problems development on an island below the 100-year flood plain would bring.

From the Richmond Police Department: “After a careful review of the circumstances surrounding the shooting death last month of Dominique S. Mangram, the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office has ruled it a justifiable homicide.” You’ll remember that this was the death investigation I mistakenly called a murder last month. Richmond’s murder total stands at 23 for 2014.

Masters of Love

Contempt, they have found, is the number one factor that tears couples apart. People who are focused on criticizing their partners miss a whopping 50 percent of positive things their partners are doing and they see negativity when it’s not there. People who give their partner the cold shoulder–deliberately ignoring the partner or responding minimally–damage the relationship by making their partner feel worthless and invisible, as if they’re not there, not valued…Kindness, on the other hand, glues couples together.
