Good Morning, RVA: Spring forward!

It’s time to remember that your oven and microwave have clocks.

Good morning, RVA! It’s 67 °F and don’t try and act like that’s not a big deal. The amazing temperatures continue today, so get out there and take advantage of them! Clouds will roll in over the weekend, and by the time selection Sunday gets here we may see some rain.

Water cooler

Some pretty big and tangible bummer vibes settled over our office after it looked like HB587 was destined to become the law of the land. You’ll remember this as the bill that would have prevented localities from ever taking down their Civil War monuments. Well, Governor McAuliffe stepped in and used his veto power to scuttle HB587, and there was much rejoicing–at least in our office. I…may have tweeted heart-eyes emojis at him.

Speaking of the Governor, he released a strongly-worded statement regarding the election of Judge Stephen R. McCullough to the state Supreme Court.

And then speaking of venerating dead white dudes who supported embarrassing causes, the Henrico County School Board voted last night to rename Harry F. Byrd Middle School (see the Massive Resistance Wikipedia page for why this is the right decision). Henrico County School Board, you are a mystery to me. First you majorly mishandle that whole white-privilege video situation, and now you take an extremely progressive step in renaming this middle school.

Last night, Dr. Bedden delivered the 2016 State of the Schools address, which, if you’ve been following along for awhile, you could probably predict most of what he said. I’m paraphrasing here, but it mostly went something like this: Please, please give us the money we need to run/fix the school system. You can scroll through the @RPS_Schools Twitter timeline for some good quotes (check the one about leaf removal), or keep an eye on the district’s website for a video of the speech which should go up soon.

This year, St. Patrick’s Day awkwardly falls on next Thursday, which means I do not know whether to avoid drinking green beer this weekend or next weekend (I’ll just avoid green beer for the rest of my life to be safe!). If green is your thing, there’s lots going on this weekend, let Susan Howson and Co. be your guide.

If you need specific STP guidance this weekend, maybe head up to Center of the Universe Brewing for a St. Baldrick benefit party? A set of COTU fans have been raising money and shaving heads to help eradicate childhood cancer–they call themselves the El Balderinos. Man, there was a lot going on in that sentence right there.

I like this New York Times bubbly chart about what each party talks (or does not talk) about.

If you have clocks that still aren’t connected to the Internet, remember to Spring Forward them this Sunday. It’s also a good time to change the batteries in your smoke detectors.

Sports!

This March, it is…mad!

  • #2 Rams open Atlantic 10 tournament play against #10 Massachusetts at 6:30 PM.
  • #9 Spiders held off #8 Fordham and now have the unenviable task of taking on #1 Dayton today at 12:00 PM.
  • #6 Hokies couldn’t get it done against #3 Miami, and now await their postseason fate.
  • #2 Wahoos cruised to a 72-52 victory over Georgia Tech. They’ll face #3 Miami tonight at 9:00 PM.

The “I’m moving to Canada if they win” Guide to Moving to Canada

Happy Friday!

This is the result: a very basic overview of what might be required to move to Canada, and some things you might want to think about. If you’re serious about this, do your own research and consult an immigration lawyer. This post does not constitute legal advice and should not be taken as such. I do not guarantee that what is posted below is accurate, though to the best of my knowledge it is. This covers only a couple of the possible ways to go to Canada; if you don’t care about moving there permanently, it’s a lot easier to just go there as a tourist for a while. This won’t cover the job/apartment-hunting/stuff-moving logistics that are common to any move, just what specifically Canada requires in order to move there.
