Good Morning, RVA: Socks and sweaters

We now return to our regularly scheduled sweaters and flannels.

Good morning, RVA! It’s 52 °F, and today’s high of 64 °F is a full 15 degrees colder than yesterday’s. Keep an eye out for patchy fog (which sounds like the name of a Scooby Doo villain) this morning between 8:00 – 9:00 AM.

The city’s breweries will see a reduction in their utility bill, as City Council passed an ordinance to lower their wastewater fees. Turns out, a byproduct of brewing (that the City would normally purchase) helps reduce the amount of nitrogen flowing out of RVA and into the Chesapeake Bay, due to science. Council made the change ahead of Stone Brewing Co., but the ordinance impacts all local brewers.

The RTD has profiles of four people whose fathers fought in the Civil War. Like, four living people. Old, sure, but definitely still alive.

Here’s a crazy picture of a UPS truck that drove off of an overpass and landed upside down. The driver, who was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, was run off the road by another vehicle.

Laughter in the Male-Dominated Room

A pretty interesting post by a guy realizing that the way he views and treats women may not be the best. Stories like this are some of the (rare) positive fallout from #GamerGate.

A few months ago I wrote a blog about frameworks. I made the point that the relationship between frameworks and framework users is asymmetric. The commitment only goes one way. The user is bound to the framework; but the framework is not bound to the user.

And then I made the comparison to a Sultan and his concubines. The metaphor was crude, and I wanted it to be crude to drive the point home. I also wanted it to be funny. It was a kind of joke.

All hell broke lose on twitter. Some people said the post was sexist. Others used the word Misogyny.

I pulled the article within two hours of posting it, rewrote it, and apologized again. But this time I kept the issue open in my mind. Three times? Something was clearly wrong with aspects of my delivery; but I didn’t know what it was. I think perhaps now I do.
