Good Morning, RVA: Soccer!

Forget about the rain, it’s the World Cup!

Good morning, RVA! It’s 72 °F. It’s raining, possibly pouring, and, depending on your living situation, an old man may be snoring. Expect the rain to continue throughout the day–at least it’s bringing cooler temperatures with it.

After the resignation of Phillip Puckett from Virginia’s Senate (which, you’ll remember, broke the 20-20 tie), lawmakers have quickly drawn up a budget to send to Governor McAuliffe ahead of the July 1st deadline. The new budget mostly keeps spending at current levels, notably removing Medicaid expansions.

After his Miracle-on-Ice-level defeat, Eric Cantor has resigned as House majority leader. Republicans will hold an election next Thursday to fill the spot.

Pasture hosts a happy hour tonight that benefits foster children who are, unfortunately, often on the move and often toting the entirety of their worldly possessions in a garbage bag. To help out, stop by the restaurant tonight with a new or gently-used duffle bag or piece of luggage.

Sports! Squirrels over Trenton, 10-4; Nats over Giants, 6-2; and the Rangers extended the Stanley Cup by defeating the Kings, 2-1. Today the Squirrels wrap their series with Trenton, the Nats finish up with the Giants at 3:45 PM, and the Heat and the Spurs battle it out in game four of the NBA finals at 9:00 PM.

World Cup

The 2014 FIFA World Cup kicks off today! What’s all this hubbub over soccer, I can already hear you saying. Oh, it’s just one of the coolest sports contests around, and it only happens once every four years–as you can imagine, coordinating a tournament for the entire world takes some doing. We’ve got a guide to what’s going on and where to watch in town.

Today’s matches:

  • Brazil vs. Croatia, 4:00 PM, ESPN

IKEA’s Life at Home Report

Not so much an article as a cool website to explore, IKEA’s Life at Home Report could/will suck away a couple of hours of your life. It’s pretty rad to see a company so focused on neat and tidy release a bunch of data and photos that are anything but.

This is the first part of the IKEA Life at Home Report, exploring people’s global morning behaviours – from wake up to take off. With the report IKEA gives access to insights about the mornings of people in eight different cities.
