Good Morning, RVA: Rain, it’s been a minute!

My garden welcomes the potential for rain with open…stalks?

Good morning, RVA! It’s 75 °F, and there’s a chance for thunderstorms all day long. That’s a bummer (even though we really need the rain), but highs in the mid-80s are definitely a bit of a relief from the recent smoking hot temperatures. Before you head out the door bring your rain gear and your smile.

It’s here! RVANews Live #004 is tonight and we are so super excited for it. Our own Susan Howson will lead us through an evening of conversations with two brilliant guests and, with any luck, each of you will ask fascinating questions. Get your ticket now, and join us tonight (doors at 5:00 PM, we’ll get started at 5:30 PM) at the Visual Arts Center! Come say hello!

Also tonight, which is unfortunate because y’all are going to be at the aforelinked RVANews Live, is the first in a series of community conversations about the future of the Lumpkin’s Jail site, aka “the Devil’s half acre.” There’s already a boatload of cash ($11 million) allocated for something at this site, so if you’ve got thoughts, opinions, or great ideas now is the time to share them. There are three more meetings scheduled in September, so if you can’t make tonight’s gathering for some reason, you’ve still got plenty of chances!

I am disappointed by this news that the plans to install a permanent bike share program in Richmond have fallen through. We’ll see what happens moving forward without the Big Bike Race™ to provide Big Bike Leverage™–I am making my skeptical face. Related: Aaron Williams talked about how neat a real bike share program would be for Richmond almost one year ago.

Check out the poster for this year’s Folk Festival! I am into this!

Let me summarize yesterday’s Apple event for you: big iPad, pink iPhones, and a new Apple TV that reminds me a lot of the Nintendo Wii.

Sports!

  • Nats were swept by the Mets last night. A new series begins with the Marlins tomorrow at 7:10 PM.

Why Won’t Anyone Learn My Name?

Remember when we all thought “Blake” sounded like a word you’d use to describe skin flaking off of a heel, and now every suntanned turd in the 11th grade is a Blake or a Bailey or a Beau? They’re all wearing tank tops and snapbacks and they make me very uncomfortable when a crowd of them gets on the bus.

Don’t get me wrong, I know some wonderful Blakes. Also this tweet.
