Good Morning, RVA: Officially a holiday weekend

And so it begins: Parades, parties, sweaters, and egg nog. It all starts now.

Good morning, RVA! It’s a chilly 34 °F right now, but the sun’s out and will stay out the entire day. That I am into! Colderish temperatures continue to be paired with sunny and clear skies throughout the weekend and maybe even most of next week.

Ah, here are the details (including those fancy architectural renderings that I love so much) about the Save the Diamond proposal I was looking for yesterday. This is not the first unsolicited proposal for The Diamond / Boulevard we’ve seen over the last decade, but it definitely feels the most professional–reasonable even. We’ll see what Council decides to do with all of this soon as the Mayor’s resolution (PDF) to “support a strategy to achieve the highest and best use” for the area hits on January 11th, while Councilman Baliles and Samuels have a resolution (PDF) from 2014 asking the CAO to issue an Request for Qualifications–it’s on the agenda for December 14th. The difference between the two paths forward is well explained by Councilman Baliles in his Novemeber newsletter. Read up before this month’s Council meeting!

Tree Chopapocalypse continues, as Michael Paul Williams weighs in with this, the best sentence ever: “And there’s something sadly ironic about this effort to preserve a single tree of dubious historic significance at the gateway of a historic African-American neighborhood substantially failed by preservation.” The City’s Planning Commission will chat on Monday about whether or not to close a teensy portion of Brook Road to create a plaza out of the also teensy concrete island in which the tree currently lives. I think, once the plaza is approved, designs will also need to be approved through various opaque and confusing city processes wherein the tree’s fate could be decided.

A Hermitage High School senior is getting the ball rolling on changing Harry F. Byrd Middle School’s name to something other than a white dude who loved segregation. Who will be the person to get this same ball rolling for Richmond Public Schools? J.E.B. Stuart Elementary School exists and awaits your renaming petition!

Peter Galuszka writing for Style Weekly reports that a new location, still within Byrd Park, has been chosen for the police memorial statue. All parties involved seem stoked.

There are more holiday events going on this weekend than you can shake a Yule Log at. Plan accordingly.

Scott Weiland, lead singer of the Stone Temple Pilots died last night–Core will be on repeat for me all day.

What Does It Take To Stay In The NFL? You Don’t Want To Know

An uplifting sports article as we head into a sports-packed weekend! Just kidding, it’s super depressing.

I started taking Adderall regularly – chasing the dragon, as they say, always after the high you had the first time. I didn’t consider myself a drug addict. This was something that was prescribed to me. By a doctor. And given that there was a noticeable difference in my productivity whenever I took it, my usage was easy to justify.

The only downside, as I saw it, was the afternoon crash. It would start off slow, with only slight changes in my energy and mood. Soon, the waves of emotions got stronger. By mid-afternoon, I’d be plummeting hard. Before long, I needed to smoke copious amounts of marijuana just to ease the comedown.
