Good Morning, RVA: Let’s get it started

Fuel up, the week has just begun!

Good morning, RVA! It’s 26 °F, and today you can expect highs in the 40s with plenty of sun in the sky. Looking at the extended forecast, we may just have enough days of sunshine in a row to dry things out! Fingers crossed.

Ned Oliver dropped this story in the RTD over the weekend: “Former Richmond official says he quit after pressure to give job to member of mayor’s church.” This follows up his previous article about the director of public works (also associated with Mayor Jones’s church) using city time to participate in conference calls related to church business.

Well, I am disappointed in you guys. Only ten people applied to become Richmond’s next school board member in the 1st District. All you had to do was apply! No election necessary!

Sean Penn wrote 10,000 words about Mexican drug lord El Chapo in Rolling Stone. Editing Sean Penn is…probably not an awesome job.

Here is the full list of Golden Globe Best Series nominees that are made by subscription services (Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, HBO, etc): Game of Thrones, Narcos, Outlander, Mozart in the Jungle, Casual, Orange is the New Black, Silicon Valley, Transparent, and Veep. That’s 100% of the Musical or Comedy category, and only Mr. Robot (USA Network) and Empire (FOX) come from more traditional TV folks. Network TV, what would you say you do here?

David Bowie, who we all thought was immortal, died last night. Here: The isolated vocal tracks from “Under Pressure”, the original “Space Oddity” video, Bowie and Bing Crosby sing “Little Drummer Boy”, and David Bowie on Extras.

Sports!

  • With their solid 72-56 win over Saint Louis, the Rams have now won six in a row and sit atop the Atlantic 10 with St. Bonaventure.
  • Spiders snapped their three-game losing streak with a win over Fordham, 93-82.
  • #4 Wahoos stumbled against Georgia Tech, losing 64-68. This certainly makes VCU’s loss to Georgia Tech look a lot better.
  • Hokies were absolutely crushed by Duke from the very first minute in a 58-82 blowout.
  • Washington lost to Green Bay in the opening round of the NFL playoffs, 18-35.

The Rise, Fall, and Almost Rise of the Caviar of Cantaloupe

This is so appealing to me!

Taylor calls what he does “freedom farming.” His philosophy is simple: Tread lightly. Let the land do what it wants and outsmart any pests, animals, or diseases that might threaten the yield. He doesn’t try to make his land conform to his desires; he wants to see what the land desires, what will thrive on it. That means interfering with it as little as possible: no effortful weeding, no spraying. No watering, even. If a crop doesn’t grow, well, then, perhaps it shouldn’t. Weeds are not the enemy. They bring rich nutrients to the ground, and they’re useful near vine crops to prevent crows from having a place to land near his fruit.
