Good Morning, RVA: Less-freezing Friday

It’s a bit warmer today, and I’m feeling a bit less put-upon by the weather.

Good morning, RVA! It’s 27 °F which is almost as warm as all of yesterday. Highs in the upper-30s / low-40s will, unfortunately, be tempered by a lot of wind making today feel like the 20s. Oh well, better than the 12s!

The cold and clear days continue through the weekend, with maybe some rain on deck for Monday.

Yesterday, the mayor’s office sent out a release announcing a “Press Conference Concerning Richmond Police Department Leadership” for 11:00 AM this morning. The RTD is reporting that Police Chief Ray Tarasovic will retire. They’ve also got a list of possible replacements, all from within the department.

The Floyd Avenue Bike-Walk Street is on the ropes after the city’s Urban Design Committee voted 7-2 against the current, watered-down plan. This seems like a loss for cycling and alternative modes of transportation in Richmond, but somewhere along the way a truly neat idea mutated into a big snoozer. Will city planners and officials Have What it Takes™ to scrap what they’ve got, try again, and implement something worthwhile?

A cold reminder that Richmond Public Schools really does need all of that money to repair and maintain their facilities.

Yesterday, President Obama announced his proposed free two-year community college plan. I found out through this animated .gif on his tumblr.
