Good Morning, RVA: Kinda warm again?

Warmer temperatures, National Signing Day, and norovirus–today’s a mixed bag.

Good morning, RVA! It’s 27 °F, but the high today is fixin’ to top 55 °F. That’s dangerously close to when I begin contemplating activities other than hunching over my desk crammed inches away from the world’s best space heater.

Water cooler

It’s National Signing Day, and ESPN has 11 straight hours of coverage. The whole thing makes me feel uncomfortable. We watch with excitement as 17-year-old kids put on hats and decide where they will sacrifice their bodies–and sometimes minds–for the slim chance at a career in football? Every year college athletics gets weirder and more distasteful (I say fully aware that I get a lot of enjoyment out of watching college sports).

Style Weekly has released their second annual Richmond Crime Almanac. As a lover of fine charts and graphs, I encourage you to check it out. But be careful not to ascribe too much meaning to data presented in aggregate. Like they say in the introduction, “But those big-picture statistics never tell the whole story. Crime was up or remained high in some neighborhoods while dropping in others.”

Students at Hampden-Sydney return to class today after Poop-N-Barfgate seems to have run its course. However, just down the road a piece in Farmville, about three dozen students have come down with the norovirus. Could this be the beginnings of Poop-N-Barf 2: Secret of the Ooze?

Today’s top best headline comes from WTVR: “What to do if you spot a feral hog locally“.

Sports!

The RTD has a nice, long look at football recruiting in the Richmond region. I like how there’s a subtle undertone of SEC-hate throughout (ugh, see, college sports!).

  • Hokies lost yet another last-second heart breaker, this time to Syracuse, despite leading by double digits late in the second half. Seven of Tech’s 13 losses have been by three or fewer points.
  • Caps blanked the Kings 4-0 last night.
  • #18 Rams look to bounce back on the road against George Mason tonight at 7:00 PM.

Black History Matters, So Why Is Wikipedia Missing So Much Of It

I love this idea of a coordinated Wikiedpia edit-a-thon! Which of Richmond’s black-history-related Wikipedia articles would you like to see improved?

As part of its programming during black history month, the Schomburg Center is hosting a Wikipedia edit-a-thon where Schomburg staff will train participants on how to properly edit Wikipedia and then set them loose on the free encyclopedia to create and improve articles relating to black history.
