Good Morning, RVA: Hot, hot, hot

It’s not just the hit Buster Poindexter song.

Good morning, RVA! It’s already 78 °F, and there’s no end in sight. Today’s highs could reach into the 100s for the first time in two years, which, while making the PBRs at Sticky Rice cost only $1, make everything else miserable.

Stay hydrated and don’t leave anything in a car you don’t want reduced to a liquid version of itself–this includes pets, children, and vinyl records.

Water cooler

OBX staple, Duck Donuts, will open an outpost at Willow Lawn this fall. While most of the talk is if Richmond has reached peak doughnut, this new location should compete mostly with the nearby Krispy Kreme.

The Camel is one step closer to ending their shorter hours of operation. Yesterday, the Planning Commission voted, 5-1, to allow the venue to host live music until 2:00 AM seven days a week for a one-year trial period. City Council will vote on the recommendation next Monday.

Sports!

  • Squirrels lost to Akron, 1-3, rematch tonight at 7:05 PM. Tickets are available online. FYI, just this year Akron changed their name from the Aeros to…the RubberDucks, an homage to the area’s rubber industry.
  • Nats fell to the Orioles, 8-2, look for revenge tonight at 7:05 PM.

World Cup

And then there were four: Brazil, Germany, Netherlands, and Argentina.

Today Brazil faces Germany at 4:00 PM on ESPN. There are only three more matches left in the World Cup–soak them up as you would the precious rays of sun (assuming it wasn’t 100 °F outside).

Why Bikes Make Smart People Say Dumb Things

The social psychology term for this bias is “fundamental attribution error”: the tendency to attribute the actions of others to their inherent nature rather than their situation, and the less we sympathize with their situation, the greater the bias…It may also help explain why I’ve been approached more than once while holding my bike by random strangers, asking me to explain the behavior of another cyclist they once saw doing something stupid. I ride a bike, therefore I’m one of them.

How many times does this happen to me! People, I do not speak for the bike community at large! Jeez!
