Good Morning, RVA: Help is on the way

Good morning, RVA! It’s 77 °F, and today should be the last day of crushing heat and humidity for awhile. We’ve got a cold front moving through that’ll get us back down in the 80s and help us remember what it’s like to be civilized. There’s a chance of storms, possibly severe, throughout the day with the odds increasing in the evening.

City Council met last night and postponed voting on the two agenda items I mentioned yesterday: new zoning for The Camel and the Pear Street Condos. Council will now go into a deep, restorative slumber until their meeting in September.

The RTD has a fascinating list of the most popular booze sold in Richmond and surrounding counties. First on that list this year, and for the last four years, Jack Daniel’s 7 Black (or as I call it, Jack Daniel’s Regular Type). Hennessy and Jim Beam round out the top three. Fireball Cinnamon Whisky, coming in at number five, has displaced Jägermeister as the most popular shot at Baja Bean. They go through 18 bottles of the stuff each week.

The Capital Ale House National Beer Expo begins today, culminating in the main event on Saturday. The schedule is vast and varied with something for every beer lover. If you feel overwhelmed let me guide you to “Craft Beer Doughnuts at Sugar Shack,” 7:00 – 11:00 AM on Saturday. I’ll see you there.

If you so desire, you can audition for American Idol today down at the Capitol.

All You have eaten: On keeping a perfect record

For breakfast on January 2, 2008, I ate oatmeal with pumpkin seeds and brown sugar and drank a cup of green tea. I know because it’s the first entry in a food log I still keep today. I began it as an experiment in food as a mnemonic device. The idea was this: I’d write something objective every day that would cue my memories into the future–they’d serve as compasses by which to remember moments.
