Good morning, RVA! It’s 75 °F, and it’s definitely summertime. Highs today, and for most of this week, sit firmly above 95 °F, humidity does its sticky thing, and you don’t even want to know what the Feels Like™ temperature is…

Water cooler

Students from Open High will protest in front of City Hall this morning at 8:00 AM over budget cuts and a possible loss of teaching positions at the school (in their words: “1 whole English Teacher Position, 1/2 of a Science Teacher Position and 1/2 of a Foreign Language Teacher Position (French), and 1/2 of the ONLY Fine Arts Teacher Position”). I haven’t seen anything official from RPS, so do with that information what you will. Students will also attend the School Board meeting tonight to voice their concerns. If you’d like to take a deep dive into the 2015-2016 RPS budget, you totally can, and you can also take a gander at the agenda for tonight’s meeting.

The overwhelmingly comprehensive schedule for this year’s Fire Flour & Fork has been released. Look upon it with awe and wonder. New this year is the Golden Ticket (PDF) for those who want to go all out. It not only gets you into most of the very best events, but one lucky Golden Ticket purchaser will become Mayor of Richmond (assuming you survive a weekend of food-related traps, hazards, and passive aggressive songs warning about the dangers of certain personality flaws)!

Despite maybe not being the second-best movie ever made, Jurassic World had the second-best domestic opening of all time. T-Rex dot gif!

Sports!

  • Squirrels won two of three against Erie–they’ve got the day off today.
  • Kickers battled to a 0-0 draw against Montreal FC this weekend. FYI, they’ve got a home game this Wednesday!
  • Nats picked up a little steam after losing to the Brewers on Friday and won two straight. They start a series with the Rays today at 7:10 PM.
  • DC United fell to Orlando, 0-1.
  • USA ended up with a 0-0 draw against the Evil Swedes on Friday. Here are the highlights, you’ll want to watch the saves-the-day header by Klingenberg.

What to expect

  • Byrd Theatre’s projector situation
  • Kids can get free meals
  • Friday Cheers continues
  • As does #untoldrva!

This morning’s longread

Ramblings about the bus barn – turn it pink

Sitting at the crossroads of the The Fan, Carytown, and Byrd Park, the [GRTC Bus Depot] has an unmatched potential to stitch together midtown Richmond while creating a tremendously productive and transformative place. However, I tremble at the thought of some of the proposals developers will put forth in the coming weeks. I have nightmares of surface parking lots, big-box retailers, and a space devoid of the characteristics that turned The Fan into one of the best neighborhoods in the country. If I had money and autonomy, here is what I would do with the space.

The City’s will solicit bids for the GRTC Bus Depot until July 8th. What would you do with the space?
