Good Morning, RVA: Grab your galoshes

Good chance of rain throughout the day, weatherproof accordingly.

Good morning, RVA! It’s 72 °F, and today feels like rain. There’s a good chance of showers–and even thunderstorms–throughout the day, so prepare accordingly (especially if you use two-wheeled transportation). Upside to the theoretical rain: temperatures should be a bit lower.

The situation in Ferguson has intensified. Overnight, anti-police demonstrations continued, and town officials deployed riot-gear-clad officers and tear gas in a scene that looks more like some war-torn country than a suburb in Missouri. Hilarious genius Robin Williams died last night. Hook is streaming on Netflix.

As of yesterday, Washington’s training camp is officially over, and the team heads back to DC. The RTD says attendance was marginally up and food sales were anecdotally down. Richmond Bizsense has some additional details about Jackson Ward’s impending GWARbar. I quote, “Derks said GWARbar will serve junk food-style fare with better ingredients. That may include house-made hot dogs and GWAR’s own take on Doritos, Twinkies, and SpaghettiOs.” Honestly, this sounds perfect.

Sports!

I absolutely love this profile of McSorley’s in the New Yorker…from 1940! It’s a truly wonderful read, a perfect bit of insight into what makes a bar great, and a look at just how different life was 75 years ago.

For one thing, it is dark and gloomy, and repose comes easy in a gloomy place. Also, there is a thick, musty smell that acts as a balm to jerky nerves; it is really a rich compound of the smells of pine sawdust, tap drippings, pipe tobacco, coal smoke, and onions.
