Good Morning, RVA: Go vote!

It’s Election Day, you have until 7:00 PM to make well-informed decisions.

Good morning, RVA! It’s 48 °F which is about 15 degrees warmer than at this time yesterday. Today’s forecast is filled with temperate temperatures in the low 70s, beautiful sunshine, and plenty of voting. Happy Election Day!

So it’s Election Day. Across the nation, folks will head to polling places to mark, punch, tap, and lever in the next round of governing humans. Polls are open from 6:00 AM – 7:00 PM, and you need to bring a photo ID with you. With any luck, you’ve done your research and are well prepared to make informed voting decisions. If not, you have until 7:00 PM to read some stuff on the internet.

Vox has an excellent roundup of elections and ballot issues from around the country. Of note to Richmonders: DC’s Initiative 71 which would allow adults to possess two ounces of marijuana and grow up to six plants.

You should probably read Zachary Reid’s school board meeting recap, although there’s not a lot in there to get stoked about. The Board voted to censure member Tichi L. Pinkney Eppes (8-1, she voted against) and discussed ways to “salvage” Binford Middle.

You don’t necessarily need to read Graham Moomaw’s update on the CenterStage property tax issue, as it’s pretty much a done deal. This sentence, however, is pretty great: “Neely told council members that at singer Ray Lamontagne’s performance at the Altria Theater Sunday night, an attendee had yelled out to Lamontagne about the beauty of the renovated theater.” Richmonders! We love nothing more than to shout crap at visiting artists.

Email Drafts the Hard Way

Some straightforward and useful tips on writing better emails. The one below is the best kind of tip: simple, obvious, and makes you feel dumb for not thinking of it yourself.

I learned a hard lesson early in my adventures of writing words on a computer screen: The last thing you write is the recipient address.

The recipient should only be added to an email when it’s time to push the Send button because buttons are easy and words are hard. A few modern email services make it easier to recall a sent message, but far too many do not and it’s just not worth the risk to me.

My habit of drafting email has its origins in fear but I’ve grown to appreciate the side benefits.
