Good Morning, RVA: Get excited

It’s the last week before the Big Bike Race™, and there’s still a lot that needs doing!

Good morning, RVA! Whoa, whoa, whoa, it’s 51 °F! Highs will hit the mid-70s, which, I think, means today looks to be pretty fall-like in character. I am very excited by this and will try my best not to wear every sweater I own simultaneously.

There’s a City Council meeting tonight, and you can check the agenda right here (PDF). Highlights include: reducing the speed limit on Floyd Avenue as part of its conversion into a bike boulevard, adding bicycle parking requirements to the City’s zoning ordinance, officially selling the old city stables to Blue Bee for their new cidery, establishing a committee to review councilmembers’ salaries, and (dun, dun, dun) they’ll talk about officially supporting a freestanding children’s hospital on the Boulevard.

I also imagine they’ll end up talking about this report that pins the blame of stagnating city services on Council’s decision to shift $9 million to fund school. That seems like a ton of money but is just a tiny, tiny fraction of the City’s annual budget. Does it really matter though? How do Council and the Mayor have any serious financial conversations when the Finance Department is in total disarray?

Check out these stills from Japan’s Mt. Aso erupting earlier this morning. Volcanos!

Sports!

This past weekend, NBA great and Petersburg standout Moses Malone passed away. WRIC talks to his former high school basketball coach.

  • Spiders picked up the win over Hampton, 31-28.
  • Kickers scored in stoppage to salvage a 1-1 draw against Harrisburg.
  • Hokies dominated Furman 42-3 and saw some promising play out of their new quarterback.
  • Wahoos, poor, poor, Wahoos. After leading #8 Notre Dame with less than :30 left in the game, UVA gave up a 40-yard touchdown to lose the game and give birth to this meme.
  • Nats lost two of three to the Marlins.
  • D.C. United battled Colorado to a 1-1 draw.
  • Washington’s 10-17 season debut against the Dolphins was pretty much a dumpster fire. Might could be a long season.

What Do You Say to a Roanoke Truther?

In the minds–and YouTube videos–of some conspiracy theorists, Chris is not a news anchor at WDBJ in Virginia. Chris, the videos say, is a “crisis actor” invented less than a month ago by the United States government as part of a false flag operation that will eventually allow the New World Order to take away every American citizen’s guns and force them into a life of subjugation and tyranny.

People. Boy, I don’t know.
