Good Morning, RVA: Get back in bed!

The gross winter weather has disrupted the roads and the schools, which may mean you can go back to sleep.

Good morning, RVA! It’s 27 °F, and we’ve got ice pellets, freezing rain, sleet–basically all the frozen water precipitations. Schools are closed / delayed, and from where I sit, the roads look like a complete mess. If you can, I’d avoid travel, but I avoid travel in most circumstances.

Water cooler

If you missed the link above, area schools are mix of closed and delayed due to the weather (which is a mix of rain and ice). We’ll update this post if and when they decided to close for the day.

With 100% of the precincts reporting, convicted criminal and guy who lives in jail Joe Morrissey has won reelection in the House of Delegates 74th District. He’s the first person to win a House of Delegates election while in jail. Come on, 74th District! The RTD’s Markus Schmidt had more, which often reads like The Onion.

Here’s a headline: “NASCAR’s Kurt Busch Testifies That Ex-Girlfriend Is An Assassin.”

Are you looking to get into comics, but feel overwhelmed and don’t know where to start? Start right here. For less than $20 you get a ton of great Image comics, and you support a great cause in the Hero Initiative. Just do it!

Sports!

  • #17 Rams beat Rhode Island in what will forever be known as The Treveon Graham Game.
  • #2 Wahoos allowed only 19 points in the first half on the way to a 65-42 victory over Clemson.
  • Hokies couldn’t overcome an early deficit against Louisville and fell 63-78.
  • Caps host the Flyers tonight.

How to Be an Expert in a Changing World

I read this last week and can’t stop thinking about it!

When I get asked in interviews to predict the future, I always have to struggle to come up with something plausible-sounding on the fly, like a student who hasn’t prepared for an exam. But it’s not out of laziness that I haven’t prepared. It seems to me that beliefs about the future are so rarely correct that they usually aren’t worth the extra rigidity they impose, and that the best strategy is simply to be aggressively open-minded. Instead of trying to point yourself in the right direction, admit you have no idea what the right direction is, and try instead to be super sensitive to the winds of change.

I notice you like train track pix. Today shows a person on the tracks. So I’ve gotta try. In choosing images to take and post, I’d ask you to remember the engineer and conductor that wave to you. I’ve worked around railroaders: all have stories about close calls, and some might share or just trail off about that one time…Photos are visceral: it must be okay, even cool, to hang out on the tracks — think concert posters, fashion layouts, hobos…Consider talking to the crews (rail and first responders) and the survivors, then go home, hug your family, and pick a different shot.
