Good Morning, RVA: Fall Friday
Are you going to wear a sweater? Let me know, I can’t decide.

Good morning, RVA! It’s 53 °F, and today’s highs in the mid-60s have me thinking I might wear a sweater. Temperatures will continue to fall over the weekend with things bottoming out around 55 °F on Sunday (lows right around freezing!). Tons of sun though–perfect weather for the throw-and-catch game of your choice.

As more folks rent their homes out on AirBnb, the City is trying to figure out how to take their cut of all that sweet, sweet short-term rental action. They estimate there’s $38,000 in annual tax revenue out there, but it’d take 2-3 employees (some in Zoning, some in Finance) to manage the process to collect it, Ned Oliver reports. Here’s the 96-page report (PDF) from the Department of Planning & Development Review, if you want to really dig in.
Yesterday, the Governor signed Executive Order #50, “Executive Action to Prevent Gun Violence.” It does a couple things: Creates a joint task force that will “develop strategies and coordinate efforts to strictly enforce existing gun laws,” establishes a tip line for illegal gun activity, forces the State Police to trace “every gun used in commission of a crime in the Commonwealth,” and bans firearms in state government buildings occupied by executive branch agencies. It’s not much, but dudeman is not a legislator. There’s only so much he can do with an executive order.
Richmond Magazine’s Mark Robinson sat down to talk with Doug Wilder ahead of his discussion today at VCU. Read all the way until the end to see what Wilder says we need out of Richmond’s next mayor.
Of course there are one million things going on this weekend–it’s Richmond in the fall! Check out these 5 things to do, these 5 things for families to do, and our giant events calendar too.

Trey Gowdy’s Benghazi Committee and the Problem of False Equivalence
Although that era is long gone, and had its share of problems even at its best, its mental habits persist, as we’ve often discussed in the “false equivalence” chronicles. The recurring theme here is the discomfort of reporters, old and young alike, with recognizing that the United States doesn’t currently have two structurally similar political parties approaching issues on roughly comparable terms. We have one historically familiar-looking party, and another converting itself into something else.
It is a fascinating yet terrifying time to be alive!
