Good Morning, RVA: Drip, drip, drip

Good morning, RVA! It’s 44 °F and rainy. The rain should continue–copiously–through the morning while temperatures warm up to the mid-50s. After today we’ve got one more day of rain before things start to clear up for a piece!

Michael Paul Williams reminds us that, as a community, we still haven’t dealt with our Confederate symbols and points to St. Paul’s Episcopal’s plan to remove their Confederate imagery as a possible regional template. As racial tension have built at places like Mizzou and Yale over the past couple of weeks, folks on those campuses are now also thinking about how to deal with their offensive symbols–Yale’s Calhoun College, named after John C. Calhoun, being the worst offender. This New Yorker piece from last week looks back to strategies used by Nuremberg after WWII as possible solutions for Yale–strategies that could work just as well here. Richmond has a unique opportunity to set a national example for dealing with this kind of stuff, but will we take advantage of it?
Ned Oliver has a few details on the new citizen group that’s now trying to save The Diamond. I know, I know, we’ve been trying to get rid of the thing for a decade or more, and now we’re trying to save it?! Well, the mayor wants to find the “highest-and-best-use” strategy for the city-owned property on Boulevard. I think he’s pretty much done dealing with baseball, but that can’t stop won’t stop these concerned citizens! They’ll unveil their plan tomorrow at the main branch of the Richmond Public Library at 2:00 PM.
Folks are trying to stop the new Maggie Walker monument before it even gets started. A petition titled “Woodman, Spare That Tree!”, with 800 signatures (!), wants to keep the existing, single tree that lives in the weird triangle of concrete between Broad, Brook, and Adams. Almost completely unrelated, I found this cool survey of street trees (PDF) on the Richmond Urban Forestry Division website.
Here’s a nerdy article in the RTD about how Windsor Farms is a Carolina Bay. If you want to double dip on nerdiness, the Theories of Origin section of the Carolina Bay Wikipedia page is fascinating and worth reading!
Sports!
- Spiders (roundball) travel to Florida for their third straight game against a Power 5 opponent. Tip off is at 7:00 PM, and you can watch on the SEC Network.
- #10 Wahoos (roundball) take on Ohio State tonight at 7:30 PM on ESPN as part of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.
- Hokies (roundball) host Northwestern at 7:00 PM on ESPNU, as part of the same event.

If Claire Danes does an interview with a magazine, I will tweet that. If Claire Danes is spotted grocery shopping, I will tweet that. If Jeremy Renner is spotted grocery shopping, I will not tweet that because Jeremy Renner is not Claire Danes. Neither is Tommy Lee Jones. Every Thursday I do “Throwback Thursday,” where I tweet a “Classic Claire Moment” from early in her career. One Thursday I forgot. I felt that I had let everyone down, and wanted to die.
So good.
