Good morning, RVA! It’s 72 °F, and today’s gonna be a hot one. Temperatures will climb into the mid-90s, humidity will oppress, and the heat index will break 100. Stay cool, stay hydrated, and stay indoors.

Richmond Public Schools have signed on to a new USDA initiative called the Community Eligibiliy Provision of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. The provision allows RPS the give free lunch and breakfast to all students, regardless of economic background, and eliminates the need for families to fill out paperwork or apply for the program at all. Zachary Reid at the RTD has more details and some of Superintendent Bedden’s thoughts.

Richmond police have charged two sisters with felonious assault after they stabbed a woman on a GRTC bus. The sisters knew the victim, and one of them had “bad blood” with the victim stemming from an incident years ago.

It’s Batman Day! Today we celebrate 75 years of the caped crusader fighting crime, kicking ass, and brooding about how life’s unfair. DC has a cool timeline of the past 75 years that’s worth your…time. Take a couple minutes on your lunch break to stop by Velocity Comics and pick up a few issues of the Dark Knight or whatever else suits your fancy (that’d be the first volume of Saga if you’re new to comics).

Unrelated to Batman Day, I think, it’s National Hot Dog Day as decreed by the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council? I don’t know what that means for you and your lunch plans, but it’s certainly a good time to revisit Richmond.com’s article on finding RVA’s signature dog.

The Bizarre Rise and Fall of the Tiki Bar

Despite a desire to get back to nature, proprietors of Tiki bars would often employ emerging tech like stroboscopic lamps to simulate lightning and summon faux rain storms by splattering windows with water to create a “3-D Sensurround” environment which supposedly inspired Walt Disney during his design of Adventureland.

This article helped me understand the whole Tiki Bar phenomenon, but I still don’t get it.
