Good Morning, RVA: Cold start to a warmish week

Temperature! Make up your dang mind!

Good morning, RVA! It’s 40 °F, and today’s what you’d call crisp. Sub-60 highs and lots of sunshine will make it look a lot warmer outside than it really is. I’ll be wearing a scarf to work this morning.

Richmond’s School Board will most likely vote tonight on a leveling plan–shifting teachers around to balance class sizes across the district which will help them qualify for federal money. Parents are justifiably upset, but this article in the RTD by Louis Llovio is the first I’ve read to mention that some classes will have their student-teacher ratio reduced by leveling. You can find the rest of the board’s agenda here.

Also in city government, the Planning Commission will meet today at 1:30 PM to vote on the Chamberlayne / VUU neighborhood plan (massive PDF) as an amendment to the city’s Master Plan. When we went through the Master Plan process a while back, the area around VUU, Lombardy, and Chamberlayne didn’t receive a ton of attention. This new plan, if adopted, will guide development in that area. I’ll have some more on this later for fellow planning nerds.

Richmond police are reporting the city’s 28th murder. At 9:21 PM on Saturday, police were called to the 300 block of Hunt Avenue on the Northside and found a man suffering from a gunshot wound. He died at the scene. On this date last year Richmond had tallied 38 murders.

I want to make sure you read this wonderful piece by Susan Howson about an oysters shell recycling program. I know that sounds boring, but you’re absolutely going to love it and maybe even feel some emotions. Pretend I’m Aladdin and you’re Jasmin. Do you trust me?

It is officially restaurant week! There are many participating restaurants and so few days to try them all, so take a gander at the menus and make your choices now…before it’s too late!

I am linking to this article about three Richmond biotech startups, only because the person I am married to has an undying love for the chickpea. Maybe you feel similarly?

Sports!

Next weekend College GameDay will set up shop in Harrisonburg for the Richmond-JMU game! This is improbable and awesome!

  • Spiders dominated Rhode Island, 37-12.
  • Hokies fell to Miami, 20-30.
  • Wahoos turned it around and beat Syracuse, 44-38.
  • Jets beat Washington, 20-34, dropping them to 2-4.
  • D.C. United blanked the Chicago Fire, 4-0.

This morning’s longread

Why Do I Make Less Than My Male Co‑Stars?

Lenny is an email newsletter magazine thing put together by Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner. Last week they had a short essay written by the Jennifer Lawrence (!) about gender pay gaps.

It’s hard for me to speak about my experience as a working woman because I can safely say my problems aren’t exactly relatable. When the Sony hack happened and I found out how much less I was being paid than the lucky people with dicks, I didn’t get mad at Sony. I got mad at myself. I failed as a negotiator because I gave up early. I didn’t want to keep fighting over millions of dollars that, frankly, due to two franchises, I don’t need. (I told you it wasn’t relatable, don’t hate me).
