Good Morning, RVA: Cold as ice

Be careful out there!

Good morning, RVA! It’s 27 °F, and man I should have put on thicker socks. Highs today in the low-40s mean thicker socks for everyone is a good idea.

Also! Be careful on the roads out there! Both Henrico and Hanover public schools are on a two-hour delay due to icy and dangerous roads. Take heed!

WTVR is reporting a fatal double shooting on Richmond’s Southside last night. If confirmed, this would be the 7th and 8th murders of 2016. I’ll let you know when I hear something official from the police.

3North Architects are responsible for a ton of interesting buildings around Richmond. Style Weekly sat down with co-founder Sanford Bond, who just picked up the very prestigious William R. Noland award, and asked him for his guiding design principles. This is a chance to pick up some free wisdom! Don’t miss it!

Mary Kelly wrote this history of VCU’s Cary Street Gym for us, and whoa is it interesting. I’m going to need someone to go block-by-block and give me the fascinating history of every building in Richmond, who wants to volunteer?

Bernie Sanders and Donald a Trump both walked away with victories in last night’s New Hampshire primaries. Vox will tell you what this means. South Carolina and Nevada are next in line at the primary polls on February 20th.

Today is Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent. This is your annual reminder, to help you avoid an awkward social interaction, that some folks will intentionally have ash crosses on their foreheads.

Sports!

  • Spiders face Saint Louis tonight at 8:00 PM. You can watch on MASN2.
  • #7 Wahoos crushed the Hokies, 67-49.

The Hidden History of African-Americans Behind the Bar

Ugh, a bunch of awkward Richmond mentions in here—like this one:

Dabney, then 73 years old, was born a slave in 1824. He would mix Juleps and, eventually, cater excellent suppers for wealthy white Richmonders from before the Civil War until his death in 1900. And if he was treated with queasy-making condescension in the process — the Kentucky journalist dubbed him an “old uncle” who is “a picturesque figure of the past” and added that “his skin is dark, but there beats in his bosom a whiter heart than is sometimes found in persons whose skin is of a lighter hue” — he was at least able to work, and work profitably, at his trade.
