Good morning RVA: cold with a chance of snow and baseball in the Bottom

A cold morning, a chance of snow, and the conversation about baseball in the bottom moves forward.

Good morning RVA! It’s a chilly, cold 32 °F, and today’s highs will only reach in to the 40s. Tonight (or early tomorrow morning), there’s a chance of snow–but don’t freak out, it doesn’t look like anything to worry about.

As of right now, roads looks good, traffic looks minimal, and sailing looks smooth.

Last night City Council passed resolution 2014-R29 after several hours of public comment. R29 expresses City Council’s support for “further negotiations in connection with ‘Revitalize RVA,'”–the mayor’s plan for the Bottom, the Boulevard, a Slavery and Freedom Heritage Site, and, most notably, a new baseball stadium. This does not commit the City to building or not building a new stadium but does keep the conversation moving forward. In an email statement after the marathon meeting, the mayor said:

I want to thank the City Council for saying yes to the future of our city. Tonight’s vote was a vote to support our efforts to find ways to generate new tax revenue for our city, to create jobs and opportunity, and to honor our heritage. This was an important and difficult vote tonight, and I’m pleased that Council is willing to allow discussions to move forward.

The ACC decided to keep their football championship game in Charlotte at Bank of America Stadium until at least 2019. This makes a ton of sense; as Roanoke’s Andy Bitter points out, Walnut Cove, NC is the conference’s geographic midpoint.

Yesterday Harold Ramis died at the age of 69. Ramis was maybe best known as Egon from Ghostbusters, but check out the dude’s writing credits: Animal House, Meatballs, Caddyshack, Stripes, Ghostbusters, and Groundhog Day. Those are some impressive and generation defining movies!

If, by some miracle, you have already managed to consume all of Downtown Abbey, True Detective, and House of Cards, Netflix just added the final five episodes of Breaking Bad to their streaming service.
