Good Morning, RVA: Bonjour!

This weekend is set to blow your mind!

Good morning, RVA! It’s 46 °F, and that’s today’s high. Booooo! Expect rain throughout most of the morning–although I said that about yesterday, which ended up with some perfect patio weather. So maybe don’t listen to me?

Forecast for this weekend’s 10k: cold. Like, mid-30s cold. I am sorry.

Water cooler

Of course you are all aware of this Saturday’s Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k Presented By Martin’s, which will bring thousands and thousands of additional humans to The Fan. It’s an amazing sight to see firsthand, and I highly recommend it. If you want to complain about parking and wait times at your favorite brunch spots, just stay in bed. The whole thing will be over and done with by the time you wrest your grumpy self from beneath the covers. The Sports Backers website has everything you need to know.

Also this weekend: The French Film Festival! My goal is to see ten films between last night and Sunday. If you dare to challenge me, we’ve got a guide to each and every film to help you prepare.

Derik Jones, son of Mayor Dwight Jones, will run for state senate. Jones currently serves on the Richmond School Board, but, as of January, had missed more votes due to absence (including six major votes) than any other school board member. The Monkees may have said it best.

Groundwork RVA is a pretty rad organization, and you should read this profile on them in the RTD today.

Virginia made national headlines when the General Assembly considered a “conscience law” that would allow businesses to legally discriminate against and deny service to gay people on based on “religious and moral convictions.” We frowned, and then chuckled, because certain members of the General Assembly always introduce inane legislation like this, and it’s (usually) quietly done away with. Well, Indiana went and passed a similar law. Like, their governor signed it yesterday?! 22 other states have signed into law similar things. In response to the new law, Sales Force, which employs more than 2,000 people in the state, is canceling business events and travel in Indiana.

Sports!

  • Caps downed the Devils, 3-2.
  • Richmond Kickers open their season tomorrow with an away game against the Wilmington Hammerheads FC at 7:00 PM. You can stream the game on YouTube.

The official name of Twitter’s bird is Larry. Yes, his name is Larry Bird. The iconic little fellow–seen in Twitter’s logo shown in TV commercials, print ads and practically every website–was named after Boston Celtics legend Larry Bird.

Cute.
