Good morning, RVA! It’s 52 °F, and we’re in for a beautiful day. Lots of sun paired with highs in the mid 70s means I’m putting my summer road trip playlist on repeat from now until tomorrow morning when the rain returns in a big way. Then I’ll put the Sigur Rós back on–at least until next week some time.

It’s bike to work day! And it’s not raining! Take advantage of this confluence of extremely rare events and break out your trusty metal steed and get to work on that thing. Depending on when you’re reading this, your proximity to the event, and the speed at which you bike, you can join up with the Mayor as he bikes to work. Well, as he bikes to Ellwood Thompson’s–which is like work for a lot of freelancers probably.
Susan Howson sat down with Team Jarrett Walker and talked to them about the process of rethinking how our bus system works for the first time since…the 60s? Ever? However, before we get started rejiggering bus lines, we’ve got to collectively decide where along the continuum of ridership and coverage we want our bus system to live. Michael Paul Williams takes a look at When the Fences Come Down, Genevieve Siegel-Hawley’s book about segregation in metropolitan schools. Read his piece to feel very, very depressed and then slightly hopeful. A quote: “…attending a high-poverty or highly segregated African-American school has a more profound effect on student achievement than individual poverty or minority status alone.”
There are six million things going on this weekend. If each one of those things donated one dollar we could rebuild Steve Austin–I mean, we have the technology, right? Also, if your Saturday plans involve the out of doors, keep your devices pointed to Facebook as the weather may force some cancellations and delays.

Just so you know, you’ve tested positive…” The nurse pauses there, and shifts her eyes to the floor. My anxiety fills the silence. I expect she’s going to say something about the whirring machines that have been measuring the baby’s heartbeat, my contractions, my blood pressure, any of those things. “For methamphetamine.” Relief floods me, and I explode with laughter. Meth? I didn’t even take Tylenol during my pregnancy.
