Good Morning, RVA: Bicycle races are coming your way

On your mark, get set, go!

Good morning, RVA! It’s 56 °F, and today looks like the perfect day to start a three-day bicycle race! From now through Sunday expect highs in the 70s, some clouds here and there, and, best of all, almost no chance of rain.

The area is still under a flood warning which continues until “tomorrow morning or the warning is cancelled.” Now is not the time to play in the James.

Water cooler

The 2014 USA Cycling Collegiate Road Nationals begin this morning! Good luck to all racers: ride hard, ride fast, and ride true. Good luck to all commuters: park your cars with wisdom and humility. Check closure maps before you head out the door.

Last night City Council voted 5-4 to cut $12 million of funding earmarked for the Shockoe Bottom ballpark from the mayor’s budget. Ned Oliver, who after covering an eight hour meeting probably needs a Gatorade or something, has the story and the next steps: Mayor Jones can veto Council’s decision in 14 days, Council can veto the veto with six votes. High drama on the horizon!

While it’s technically open for most of the year now, the South of the James market returns this Saturday to it’s springtime glory fully dilated and ready to deliver fresh vegetables, fruit, and Mrs. Yoder’s doughnuts.

Things that are going on tonight that are not a bicycle race: First Fridays and Friday Cheers. If your weekend calendar still hungers for even more, cram this, this, or this into it’s gaping maw.

WTVR reports Richmond’s 16th homicide in 2014 and one of the most awful stories I’ve heard in a long time. This is the Southside’s 12th homicide of the year; the area averages 18 homicides per year since 2009.

This morning’s longread

Programming sucks

Thank God I’m no longer a programmer.

Websites that are glorified shopping carts with maybe three dynamic pages are maintained by teams of people around the clock, because the truth is everything is breaking all the time, everywhere, for everyone. Right now someone who works for Facebook is getting tens of thousands of error messages and frantically trying to find the problem before the whole charade collapses. There’s a team at a Google office that hasn’t slept in three days. Somewhere there’s a database programmer surrounded by empty Mountain Dew bottles whose husband thinks she’s dead. And if these people stop, the world burns.
