Good Morning, RVA: #betterwithbedden

Richmond’s superintendent decided to stick around for tomorrow’s impending snow.

Good morning, RVA! It’s 48 °F, and with a high of 64 °F (!) today, you’d never imagine that we’re staring down the barrel of Yet Another Winter Weather Event. Expect rain this afternoon to continue through the night, at some point switching over to ice, and finally changing to snow Thursday morning. Most weather folks have us ending up with just a couple of inches of snow accumulation.

The Boston School Committee chose Tommy Chang as their new superintendent, which means they did not choose our superintendent, Dana Bedden, who pulled his name from consideration just hours before the committee held their vote. Almost immediately afterwards, the Richmond Public School Board approved Bedden’s 2015-2016 budget, of which the RTD’s Zachary Reid has the details. Keep in mind that the mayor must include this money in his budget, which then must be approved by City Council.

The City of Hopewell has no water. Their water treatment plant leaked a few hundred gallons of diesel into the nearby river which forced a shutdown. With the water treatment facility offline, residents should boil their water for the next two days.

Sweetbriar College announced yesterday that they would close on August 25th, making the class of 2015 their final graduating class. The ever-thoughtful Aaron Williams shared some thoughts on Twitter about what the future could hold for small colleges throughout the country–something that both terrifies and excites me.

Today’s best headline is from The Roanoke-Times: “Bear-human conflicts rise across Virginia as population grows.”
