Good Morning, RVA: Best part of waking up

Let’s get this week started, shall we?

Good morning, RVA! It’s 65 °F, and it will definitely be a beautiful day in the neighborhood. Highs right around 80 °F and almost no chance of rain make today, in a word, lovely. Fair warning: the number of sockless days remaining dwindles, so make sure you take full advantage!

A bunch of folks are reporting that Chief Administrative Officer Byron Marshall is no longer a City employee. WTVR says he resigned, while NBC12 puts it a little stronger saying the City “has reached an agreement with the CAO by which he will leave city service.” The CAO is basically the Mayor’s Hand, and it will be interesting to learn the circumstances of his departure and the plan to replace him.

Speaking of, maybe the new CAO can start letting City Council know when offers are made to buy city-owned property?

Richmond Bizsense has a piece about how the new GRTC bus transfer station has affected Broad Street businesses. Interesting enough, but check out this stat, which blew my mind: “A recent BizSense walkthrough counted 44 businesses operating out of Broad Street-facing storefronts between Foushee and 4th streets. Another 22 spaces were vacant, leaving an occupancy rate of about 67 percent.”

Robert Griffin III dislocated his ankle in yesterday’s game against Jacksonville. He’ll get an MRI, but his immediate return seems unlikely, which is a bummer for that dude. Luckily, wiz-kid backup Kirk Cousins is one of the best in the biz and, honestly, may give Washington a better chance this year than Mr. III.

I got a bit of a summer cold while reading Stephen King’s The Stand this past weekend. Then, around the same time, I learned that the “2014 Ebola outbreak in West Africa has killed more people than sum total of all the previous outbreaks since the virus was first identified in 1976.” So now I’m pretty much convinced that I’ve caught Captain Trips.

Sports!

  • Squirrels fell to evil Binghamton on Friday, ending the 2014 season. So long, and thanks for all the nutz!
  • Kickers advance to the USL PRO semifinals after a 2-1 victory in extra time against Charleston Battery. Richmond takes on the Harrisburg City Islanders this Saturday.
  • Nats went two-of-three against the Mets, face the Braves tonight at 7:10 PM.
  • Washington dominated Jacksonville 41-10.
  • Hokies, unable to pull off the come-from-behind victory, fell to ECU 28-21.
  • Wahoos squeak by Louisville, 23-21.

This morning’s longread

Ditching Twitter

Add in the flood of information and emotion from something like Ferguson (or war crimes or an epidemic) and there we all are, gradually drowning. So people get huffy about the volume emotion that these events arouse–angry that others are angry about the wrong things or too many things or in the wrong register. As with stampedes, we tend to blame individual or group character for these self-escalating conditions.
